I regard them more like sound/feel switches than effective volume reduction.Īttenuators on the other hand are more effective at volume reduction and the only effect in amp behavior is how the attenuator behaves as a load. Looser low end, less dynamic range, overall smoother sound at lower wattage. The real difference is that it will feel and sound different. Yes, this causes some volume reduction, but it's not a huge difference unless it goes down to very low power (talking about 1-2W max). Power scaling aka low wattage modes make the amp behave more like a lower power amp. Guitar sounds much, much better with more volume which is often not suitable for home use though.
